La vie de famille suit les péripéties du camp Winslow : Carl, un policier, sa femme Harriett et leurs trois enfants, Eddie, le garçon rebelle, Laura, la fille studieuse et la petite dernière Judy. Ils hébergent également sous leur toit Estelle, la mère de Carl, ainsi que Rachel, la sœur d’Harriett, et son fils Richie. Leur vie à tous est bouleversée le jour où ils font la connaissance de leur voisin, Steve Urkel, un garçon surdoué mais extrêmement maladroit, qui s’éprend de Laura.

Urkel has to come to the rescue when a wandering satellite punctures the spacecraft in which he's traveling, preventing him and a team of astronauts from re-entering the Earth's atmosphere. With the two other astronauts on board unconscious, it's up to Urkel to repair the ship -- from the outside.
